We are using ES, and are on kibana v5.3.
Is there a way to import/export saved objects, eg: queries, visualisations/dashboard via a API, rather then the UI itself?

The API was introduced later than v5.3, so there is no way to do it. You could query elasticsearch for the documents in the .kibana index, but you have to do the parsing and filtering all by yourself.
