When building from the latest release, the output of filebeat version is filebeat version 6.5.5 (amd64), libbeat 6.5.5, not the expected 6.5.4

The output version of a branch will never match an already released version so their semver cannot match either.
If you build master branch you'll actually get filebeat version 7.0.0 (amd64) so maybe I'm not understanding your problem properly.
I'm a bit confused, because I'm not using a branch, I'm using a tagged release (6.5.4).
