Multi length ngrams

Hi all, I am trying to wrap my head around indexing a field with ngrams of
multiple lengths (e.g. 3 to 8). What I am trying understand is how the
quality of matches is correlated with the number of ngrams.

This discussion had quite of bit of useful info:
https://groups.google.com/d/topic/elasticsearch/QXYvb27Pvl8/discussion but
it doesn't really help with figureing out what the range should be.
Ideally I'd like a calculator that shows the relationship between ngram
parameters, index size, and expected query time. But of course I understand
that without a full description of the source data and use cases this is
just about impossible.

Any pointers would be helpful.

Thanks!
Jonathan
