Need help parsing XML and general strategy with logstash

I have XML output from a tool called nmap. I am wanting to pull the ports from this, but also want to take the scan information and either append that, or stick that in an Elastic index and hopefully get some unique ID that I can reference. I’m far from an ES veteran…

I’d like to parse this information and insert into some index in ES like, nmap-scans-{datetime}.
Once inserted, there should be a unique ID given to the entry right? Or, am I thinking incorrectly…?
And, I’d then like to take that ID and for each unique host in that same XML, parse the entries for relevant information and append the ID received previously.

I’ve written a parser in Go, but wanted to see if this was possible via a logstash config, so that I can have XML documents dropped into a folder and processed by various team members.

OK, so you want to transform some XML that you have not shown to us.

Yes, a document in an Elasticsearch index has an _id that is unique to that index.

Maybe. logstash can certainly query Elasticsearch. If you ask it to query ES for data logstash itself has just processed then there are caveats, and sometimes it will not work.

That said, if you are trying to establish connections between within a single nmap scan then it may be easier to just do it in logstash before sending anything to ES.

That doesn’t really tell us what you want to do with the XML that you have not shown us.

I would suggest that you run nmap against two machines, with two ports (not 1000), at least one of which responds. Then change any IPs to something on the 192.168.1/8 subnet (127.0.0/8 is also an option). Also change the port numbers. Then show that XML and explain what you want to parse out and establish connections between. Basically an minimum reproducible example.

I thought the XML snippets I included would be enough, but I see I probably need to include the full XML document itself.

I agree that it’s probably unclear on what I’m trying to get it. And, I think that’s because I don’t fully understand various parts of logstash or elasticsearch.

I think I’ll mark this closed/completed until I can better formulate my ask and provide better data to help with understanding my question.

For now, I modified my Go parser to interact with elasticsearch and after posting the data in scans, I use the returned ID when putting the individual port entries into the system.

Hoping to come back with more clarity and examples in the future, once I better understand things.
