Patterns directory and relevance with elasticsearch

Hi Guys,

I am just trying to find the relevance document on patterns directory and what is the function? I am bit confused on patterns directory. I mean lets say I am accpeting nginx data using logstash with appropriate config file placed in conf.d dir then what advantage will I get by putting patterns in pattern directory.

I am sorry I tired searching a lot but unable to find any particular info hence as my last resort I am putting in front of community.

Please help

The patterns directory is used if you define your own grok patterns to use in your grok expressions (and don't want to define these patterns in the grok filter configuration itself).

Ah I see that means I can define my own patterns to normalize the data, huh,
