Range searches using search box? Lucene syntax not working

Green coder here. Just upgraded from Kibana 3.

None of my text query range searches seem to work anymore. All of my old text queries result in the error:

"Discover: An error occurred with your request. Reset your inputs and try again"

Are there any changes to ES or K that would affect using Lucene syntax for these types of searches? Thanks!

You might get some help if you write down an example query that used to work in Kibana 3 but doesn't in 4.
