Recovering from corrupt indexes

I opened this issue, which was closed and considered a symptom of an OOM,
etc. However, I still need to determine if there is any way to fix a
corrupt index...even if that means some partial data loss, it would be much
better than scrubbing the entire index.

I assume there is some way to get indexes happy again, rather than having
to throw everything away?
