Reindexing error

We are attempting to update the mappings for an index.
The new mapping includes multiple aliases (around 36)

When we attempt to reindex the old indices to the new mappings we keep receiving this error:

Reindex can not write to a field alias.

Is there a work around? Is there a particular reason why this error populates?

Without understanding your mappings and your reindex request, it's hard to say.
