Repository-s3 plugin, define endpoint (provider other than AWS)

Curious if there are any plans to restore the ability to define an S3 endpoint for the repository-s3 plugin?
I'd like to be able to use a provider other than AWS. It seems this was possible in Elastic5 but that functionality is missing in 6.

The configuration for S3 repository clients did move around between the 5.x and 6.x series, but the reference manual indicates there is an endpoint setting in the 6.x series.
