Is there a recommendation on whether ES should be 'native' (for want of a better word) or is containered perfectly acceptable and robust? in a production environment??
The recommendation is - do what is best/makes sense for you 
That's a bit of a cop out, but Elasticsearch will happily run in either environment, so the best way to approach it is to optimise for your own environment.
