Wildcards in Document filters

Everything tells me that simple asterisk should work for a wildcard in a filter, but I'm finding it temperamental. Please see picture below. Sometimes it appears to work, other times ignored.

Am I merely structuring it incorrectly?

Normally I click on "Edit as DSL query" and add my query, as per the attached image.
