Backing up elasticsearch using open source dump tool or official snapshot

I am reviewing two options for backing up elasticsearch right now.

Unofficial dump tool

Seems real easy to use.

Official snapshot

Seems not that hard to use, but will probably have to setup a nfs in our case.

I am curious whether anyone has experience in using the open source dump tool mentioned above.
Would it lock the database so the data is in a safe state, point-in-time view state?
What tool would you recommend for a light small cluster?

Thank you.
