heard recently that on ubuntu (version?) it works much faster. It's
true? What meaningful difference between ubuntu and centos that makes
it faster if it's true?

I haven't tested CentOS vs. Ubuntu, but I highly doubt it makes any
difference. The key parts are various ES/Lucene settings, JVM tuning
and such.
