Best Practices for templates created for Indexing?

Can anyone would let me know if there are best practices for creating templates for indices?

Like if I can have multiple templates along with one general template?

eg: I have a template for IIS logs, another one for MSSQL logs and the other general template which for cross-index search (Common index pattern)

Sorry if I hijack the thread, but is this parameter removed with the new composable index templates? If so, how can I have an index match multiple templates in ES 7.10? Thanks!
