Been looking around for the documentation to writing my own go-agent but the only things I can find are the data examples in the apm repo. Is that the documentation that exists?

We don't have documentation on this, so the data examples, that you've already discovered, is the best place to start. However, make sure you also see our APM Overview docs: https://www.elastic.co/guide/en/apm/get-started/current/overview.html
