Does filebeat handles .gz zipped log files?

I am interested in sending logs of an Elastic Map Reduce instance to Elasticsearch. But these are logged as .gz extension files. When i see the logs in Kibana, i am getting non-readable characters. Can we send .gz formatted logs to Elasticsearch using filebeat?
