ECS network.direction field

Hi All,
Can anybody help me in understanding the meaning of network.direction field in ECS ?
I went through Network Fields | Elastic Common Schema (ECS) Reference [8.11] | Elastic

Please help me with an example to understand the meaning of :
1.) external
2.) internal
3.) inbound
4.) outbound
5.) unknown
