ElasticSearch 6.8 Slow on Apple Silicon

Hi everyone! I'm running ElasticSearch 6.8 on my Mac Air M1 which I downloaded from https://www.elastic.co/guide/en/elasticsearch/reference/6.8/zip-targz.html. I noticed that our test suite runs much slower on Elasticsearch on Apple Silicon than it does on my Intel MacBook Pro.

In the Intel MBP, the test suite runs in ~3mins while on the M1 it takes ~12mins. I noticed that the tests involving ElasticSearch are particularly slow on the M1.

Questions:

  1. Is this to be expected?
  2. Any ideas on how I could improve speed on M1? Should I use a different version of ES?
  3. Can I expect better performance on Elasticsearch 7 running on M1?
