Elasticsearch Heap Size check

I am running Centos 6.9 with elasticsearch 2.4. I have my heap size set in /etc/sysconfig/elasticsearch
set to ES_HEAP_SIZE=31g, but when I type jps -l -m -v I get this output 381 sun.tools.jps.Jps -l -m -v -Dapplication.home=/usr/java/jdk1.8.0_77 -Xms8m which I believe means that my heap size is 8m instead of 31g.

Can anyone clarify this?
