I would add to this that if you are starting a new project, start with 1.1.0.

Hi David - Can you point us to any documentation to understand best
practices around ES upgrade (especially if I want to achieve zero
downtime)? For instance, I have a few questions as below:
If I am running 1.0 in production at this time, can I do a rolling
restart of ES nodes by upgrading them to 1.1, one at a time (during which
at one point some nodes will be on 1.0 and others on 1.1)
If I want to have no downtime, do I upgrade my cluster first or my
client first (I am using transport client).
-Amit.

1.1 should be compatible with 1.0.
It means you can do rolling upgrade and upgrade your client to 1.1 and then your cluster.
My 2 cents.
