Hi, I want to setup a demo for my manager on ES with production data (from
the mainframe). I don't have admin rights on my machine and production data
is sensitive, so if I load it in a server elsewhere the whole department
may be in trouble.
Is there any way that I can mount a portable server, add some plugins and
load some data for making some graphs and visual reporting on my non admin
laptop?
Thanks.

I had no luck. I'm not even sure why the admin rights request is popping,
but I can't get a server running. Maybe if there's a tut or something that
make it run from a usb stick in minimalist mode it could work, but I
couldn't find such thing.

As long as you have Java installed, I think this should work.
Do you have any trouble so far?

I'll investigate further. The enter admin password screen pops up when
executing it in any way. I believe it has to do with opening ports for
listening. That's why I thought that a portable usb stick version should
deal with it, maybe there's or a local only mode .bat file?
The thing is that loading company's data on external systems can bring
unwanted attention to me, and getting clearance for that is not easy. The
more sophisticated the attempt, the more trouble we can get. Probably
creating a dummy file on a personal server is the best idea if I can't run
it locally.

Could you explain more "What" is not working?
Any message when you launch elasticsearch?
May be all network ports are blocked?
You could also think of doing something on a cloud instance or personnal
computer ?

Odd - I've had ES 1.1 with logstash 1.3 running on an XP machine with no
admin rights
Was only connecting to it locally though
