ES upgrade from 1.7.1 to 2.4

Hi, I'm looking to upgrade from 1.7.1 to 2.4 and then eventually to 5.X. Since 2.4 now supports dot characters in it's indices, can I assume that I can upgrade directly and keep my indices intact?

I've searched the forum and can see people have done a 1.7.X to 2.4, but not sure if they had ever used dot's in their indices.

But yes, you can go from 1.7 to 2.4.

You will however need to reindex data before moving to 5.x as indices created in 1.x can not be read by 5.x. You may therefore be better off reindexing into a new 5.x cluster directly.
