I have setup a crawler, but do not recognise any evidence of its progress.
Is there a page showing a count or an animated graphic suggesting progress?

You can monitor crawls both in the UI and programmatically over the API. Here's a good place to start: Crawl web content | Elastic App Search Documentation [7.15] | Elastic. It's possible the current monitoring functionality doesn't expose progress at the granularity you're looking for.
