How to manage Elasticsearch data across multiple indices with Filebeat, ILM,

I have read this through but cannot seem to get it to work. My current issue is that logs are being written but they are not landing in elastic. However I have no idea to work out what is going on. What can I do to understand what filebeat is doing and where, if anywhere, it is writing logs to?
