i guess that all depends on what kind of customization are you looking for

for example
the customized css file, layout the page elements. for the existing dashboard or visualize module

i am guessing that would be possible thru plugins, however you will need to dig in on your own and will require quite some work to familiarize yourself with kibana source code.
