Metricbeat-* vs metrics-*

I noticed that these days there are index patterns & dashboards for both metricbeat-* and metrics-*. What's that about?

I'm using logstash to ingest the data into elasticsearch, so my data goes into the metricbeat-* index, but some of the predefined dashboards seem to be looking for a metrics-* index pattern, which does not match any indices. What am I doing wrong?

Hi @muhdiekuh and welcome to the forum :slightly_smiling_face:

You are not doing anything wrong. metrics-*is the pattern that Elastic's Agent uses which improves the overall Observability experience. I recommend you to take a look at it here Quick start: Get logs and metrics into the Elastic Stack | Fleet User Guide [7.12] | Elastic

Thanks for the warm welcome

Does that mean that if some of the dashboards require metrics-*, that they do not support beats but only the Elastic Agent?

Right now beats are still the recommended way, right?

Fleet and Elastic Agent are still Beta but close to GA. It benefits from the code of Metricbeat and Filebeat and can help you with APM, tracing, etc. Both are supported and, definitely, Agent and Fleet are recommended because it will give you a lot more features and functionality, but it´s still beta :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:
