I would like to ask what is an ILM? and is it related to Legacy templates? Is possible to assign an ILM to a Legacy template?

ILM is used to automate phase transition(hot-warm-cold-frozen-delete) automatically.
if you add it i templates , that policy will be automatically added to all future indices.
And to add to what @Venkata_Raja said so well, the ILM policy can be set in either the new or legacy templates.
