Does kibana benefit significantly from from the index sorting feature of elasticsearch?

It depends on how you use Kibana. If you are doing a lot of searches with the same sorting then yes, kibana will be able to benefit from early search termination for those requests. However, if you are performing searches with lots of different sorts then using index sort feature may not help at all since only some searches would be able to benefit from early terminate.
