but I'm wondering if there's an easy solution for rolling up the historical data as the storage will get very large otherwise if one wants to look back more than a short period of time.
Not natively.
We generally take the view that having the raw data lets you discover things you didn't think of later down the track, much easier than working with a representative summary.
