Running slow log for long periods of times

I enabled slow, for debugging purposes, What will the impact be if I run it for long periods of times.
Will there be a performance hit?

Also, what is the best practice in regards to the log files are they basically only for debugging or can I use them for metrics as well. And if they are what will be the best way to index them from the log file.
I was thinking of just using FileBeats.

But would there be any value to doing that? What are other companies doing.
