Search_as_you_type highlight issue

Continuing the discussion from Search_as_you_type and highlight:

"It will only highlight matching tokens — if you leave out the space after fox, it won't mark that."

why does this happen and how can i use a search_as_you_type but highlight both terms on the query without including the space at the end.
