I'm guessing you're talking about this in the context of cross cluster search (skip_unavailable setting, for those that may stumble on this post later), which was added in version 6.1 via this pull request. You could just stand up a single v6.1 or above CCS node to talk to 5.6 clusters though, if that's an option for you. You may also be interested in watching the What's Evolving in Elasticsearch talk from Elastic{ON} where Simon talked about this starting at about 12 minutes and 50 seconds in and continuing for about 2 minutes.
