Snapshot a single node

I'm new to the Elasticseach snapshot API. For the documentation I've read,
it seems that you can either snapshot your entire cluster or snapshot
specific indices. Is it possible to snapshot and restore to a single node?

Not unless it's a single node cluster

Ok fair enough. I have a situation where I want to replace some failing
disks on a node, so I want to back up the data on that node only then
replace the disks and restore that data from that node. Would I be able to
just tar up the directory containing the data for that node then unpack
onto the new disk?

If you are in a multi-node cluster with replicas then just shutdown the
node and the others will recover fine thanks to the replicas.
