Twitter plugin retweeted is always false

Trying Twitter plugin for Logstash. I am wondering why the plugin is unable to capture retweets? The mapping value for retweeted Twitter is always false --- "> retweeted": false

AFAICT the plugin just propagates the retweet value provided by the Twitter library so it doesn't look like a bug in the plugin. This was reported as a GitHub issue a while back:
