I have just tried to update from 8.2.0 to 8.3.1 by following the instructions:

Upgrade Elasticsearch | Elastic Installation and Upgrade Guide [8.11] | Elastic

Since then, I have this error message
elasticsearch.service: Failed with result 'timeout'.
which I tried to correct by adding time :
#TimeoutStartSec=75
TimeoutStartSec=180
This did not change anything.
There was another error :
not all primary shards of [.geoip_databases] index are active
which I corrected with :
ingest.geoip.downloader.enabled: false
After these modifications, corrections, I still have a 'timeout' problem:
elasticsearch.service: Failed with result 'timeout'.
Also, I have another message :
elasticsearch.service: Got notification message from PID 71585, but reception only permitted for main PID 71519
If anyone has any idea about these problems?

So I did some research and often it says it's a bug so ...
I also found this article :

• Services using the "Type=Notify" and "NotifyAccess=All" settings are vulnerable to being inadvertently shut down by other services - Red Hat Customer Portal
  and it says:
• Services defined in systemd not using the Type=Notify and NotifyAccess=All settings may print one of the following message in the log.
  So I added the value :
• NotifyAccess=all
  in :
• [Service]
  which was missing and no more service downtime after the set time of :
• TimeoutStartSec=
  So I will consider this topic :
• RESOLVED.
