Using a newer version of the java client with an older ES

We want to use the 0.90.11 Java client because it contains a bug fix, but
we're on ES 0.90.9. Do we need to update ES too or can we get away with
just updating the client in this case?

Unfortunately yes you will need to upgrade and match your ES Java client
with the ES server version.
