Change default elastic cluster password without x-pack?

noob question here.

When using logstash to send data into the elastic cluster, the output section has entries for the elasticsearch cluster username and password.

According to this page, https://www.elastic.co/guide/en/x-pack/current/security-getting-started.html, I need to install x-pack to change the default elastic password.

Is that true or is there a way to change that password without x-pack?

(weird politics may possibly prevent me from installing x-pack so I'm asking the question to ensure I have a good answer)

Thanks

Elasticsearch does in itself not have any security built in, so there is no password to change if you are not using X-Pack.

Thanks. That's what I thought, but I wanted confirmation.
