Controls showing incorrect document count

I have a map on a Kibana dashboard and a series of controls. The controls have a count of documents associated with the filter value.

However, the counts there don't line up with my global count of documents (see upper right hand widget in the dashboard). For instance, the 'sectors' control says there are 44,700 documents that have the value 'mining'. But when I click that filter, the map shows 205,416 points.

Is this an issue with how the controls count the documents? Does it size out after a certain number? Is there a way to not display the (incorrect) document count in the controls dropdown?

By the way, both the controls and the "projects" count in the upper right point to the same index.
