I don't think head is still something you can use.

Im trying to learn an use elastic search, and my coworker tell me to install elasticsearch because its what he uses, i just want to learn how it works.
So you don't need HEAD to understand elasticsearch.
You should install Kibana and go to the Developer Console if you want to play with elasticsearch instead of using CURL.
If you are totally new, I'd recommend reading https://www.elastic.co/guide/en/elasticsearch/guide/current/index.html although it's old, a lot of principles still apply.
