Errors With Canvas

When I choose a data source and click preview, I get one of two errors, depending on the source. If I use TimeLion and I get a [timelion] > Request failed with status code 502. If I go with Elasticsearch raw documents, I get [esdocs] > Unexpected error from Elasticsearch: [unsupported_operation_exception] null

Is there some kind of setup that's required, is Canvas a paid license feature only?

Are you able to access your data in other parts of Kibana normally, for example in Discover and Timelion?

Canvas requires basic (free) license.

Yes, I've got multiple index patterns that I've built dashboards, and searches on top of. I've got some timelion visualizations as well.
