Latest change to Elasticsearch configuration failed

We tried to run the following upgrade:

Change size from 15 GB to 29 GB RAM

The result was:

Finished 2 hours ago and took an hour, but ultimately failed

We now seem to have both our old and new instances running, and we're not sure what will happen to new data which we add to the system — whether it will be added to the new instances, or the old instances, or both, or neither.

What can we do to clean this up without risking data loss?
