Point in time backups with snapshot and restore

Hi All,
I was hoping to that multiple incremental snapshots created using this
mechanism would allow me to go back in time to revert few documents that
got indexed. However what I observed was, if I have 3 incrementally built
snapshots, I can only restore the most recent 3rd snapshot. When I try to
restore an intermediate second one, I get errors in the log file which
suggest an check-sum error. I earlier had compression enabled earlier which
I turned off and tried a fresh set of 3 snapshot. But still I got the same
issue.

So, is what i'm trying to achieve a valid scenario for ES snapshot/restore
mechanism?
I understand, I can do this by taking a full backup on to a different
storage container and get this done, but is there any other recommended way
for this ?

Thanks in advance!
Vinayak
