So I read that Elastic now supports using G1 Garbace Collectior. Is it also supported on for example Java 1.8.0_191 or is JDK 10+ a total requirement?

We only support G1GC with Java11 on Elasticsearch 6.5 and above. It is worth reading this thread on the topic and what it takes for us to declare something as supported as well as this blog post.
