Cannot save Searches or visulation in kibana

When i try to save either a new search/visualization from discover/Visualize i get the follwoing error:
Blocked by:[FORBIDDEN/12/index read only / allow delete (api):: [cluster_block_exception] blocked by : [FORBIDDEN/12/index read-only/ allow delete (api).

As well i cannot even delete either a dashboard, saved searches or visulalization.
It looks like everything has gone read-only?

Can anyone explain to me what this means ?

Please check the privileges assigned to your user role.

They can be looked under Management>Elasticsearch>Security>Roles

I have not installed x-pack , therefore no user/role in place. This is a generic out of teh box install of elasticsearch/kabana 6.0 on linux.
All directory permissions are 755.
