Using Kibana 8.8.1 and ES 8.8.1 I deleted an index template as follows and it was acknowledged:
DELETE /_index_template/my_template
However, when I run the following the template is still there:
GET /_cat/templates?v
Why is this happening? Thanks.

Could you share the output of the cat template call?
And what's the output of
GET /_index_template/my_template
Sure. I need to clarify that the template I deleted was called 'template_tip'. It was acknowledged. And I can repeat this behavior with other templates. Basically I'm unable to delete a template, or so it seems. Also I see a bunch of dot indices that I don't remember seeing before I upgrading to v8. Can you help understand where those came from?

Sorry you said cat so I misunderstood. I think you want this output:
{
"error": {
"root_cause": [
{
"type": "resource_not_found_exception",
"reason": "index template matching [template_tip] not found"
}
],
"type": "resource_not_found_exception",
