Having our own Elastic search DB, if we want to use Kibana only for log viewing for Production MS use, do we need a license still?

Welcome to the community.

It depends what is a purpose of your Elastic deployment.
If you want to use for internal use like monitoring own logs by using the basic license, without any charge to anyone it's free.

The license allows the free right to use, modify, create derivative works, and redistribute, with three simple limitations:

  • You may not provide the products to others as a managed service
  • You may not circumvent the license key functionality or remove/obscure features protected by license keys
  • You may not remove or obscure any licensing, copyright, or other notices

Check FAQ or the software licensing FAQ and features per the subscription model. Also check the discussion.

What is the licensing strategy for Kibana only use? Is it user based?
Also " You may not provide the products to others as a managed service" did not get this. If you can pls explain.

There is no such thing, Kibana is an Elasticsearch client, so depending on your use and the features you want you need a Elasticsearch license.

I think that this basically means that if you offer accesss directly to Kibana to your clients, you need a license.

It is best to contact elastic directly for questions about licenses.

I share the same opinion as The Jedi Leandro.

There is another topic which more clearly handle your case.
