Machine learning jobs on separate cluster - possible?

Is it a strict requirement that all ML nodes must be members of the same cluster as the data nodes?

I'm trying to figure out whether I can have eg 2 nodes with platinum x-pack licenses to run ML jobs from a basic licensed cluster of eg 10 nodes, without having to license 12 nodes just to run ML.

Alternatively, if there is another way to achieve my goal, I'm all ears.
