So I waited a LONG time with my upgrade. I was running ES 1.7.5 on a single machine. After doing lots of reading and getting thoughts from folks here, I decided to try the 1.7.5 -> 2.4.0 upgrade and then try the migration helper. After doing the install and using upgrade helper, it shows all shards yellow, so I wan't able to do the reindex. The solution for this, according to the docs, was to spin up another server. Meh. So I nuked all the data and started fresh. I'm sure it's useful for a cluster, but the migration helper on a single node didn't really apply apparently.
