Upgrading from .20 -> .90.3

I'm trying to update from .20.5 to .90.3. I stop my ES instance, run sudo
dpkg -i elasticsearch-0.90.3.deb. It runs with the following message:

(Reading database ... 74380 files and directories currently installed.)

Preparing to replace elasticsearch 0.90.3 (using elasticsearch-0.90.3.deb)

...

Stopping elasticsearch....

Unpacking replacement elasticsearch ...

Setting up elasticsearch (0.90.3) ...

update-rc.d: warning: /etc/init.d/elasticsearch missing LSB information

update-rc.d: see http://wiki.debian.org/LSBInitScripts

Starting elasticsearch...

Processing triggers for ureadahead ...

When I go to check the ES version, it still says .20.5 and doesn't seem to
have updated to .90.3 (doesn't seem to have any files installed, nothing).

If I then try to stop ES again using sudo ./elasticsearch stop it says: -
ElasticSearchIllegalStateException[Failed to obtain node lock, is the
following location writable?:
[/mnt1/elasticsearch/data/knowledgehound_cluster]]

Does anyone know what's going on, and if there's a way to resolve this? I
have no clue if I'm doing this right, and what the upgrade procedure is
supposed to look like. Based on the messages from the deb install, it
looks like it worked fine, but something seems off. Any help would be
appreciated as I'm beyond stumped.

Hey,

where do you check the version? Are you sure that
'/etc/init.d/elasticsearch stop' actually stopped the running instance?
(Doesnt look like it from here)
What debian version are you trying this on?

I'm on Ubuntu 12. I'm not sure if it stopped... I believe it did?
