Dashboards and index patterns lost after every upgrade

Hello, I 'inherited' the clusters so I don't know the details of 'how we reached this situation', but I hope that the facts that I have will be enough to have a possible solution.

I have 3 very similar clusters: staging, logging and production.
On production ONLY, every time I upgrade kibana I loose all the dashboards and index patterns.
What I manually do to fix it is to point the .kibana and .kibana_7.xx.x aliases to the last working kibana index, that for me is .kibana2_7.12.0_001. This way, I recover all my dashboards and index patterns.

Now, I want to move to ES 8.x, and as far as I understood, this 'trick' won't be possible anymore (plus, I'd like to solve it properly!).

Any Idea on where should I look?

Found a working setting:

I've set in kibana.yml the setting kibana.index = .kibana2_7.12.0_001, and it seems to work: no dashboards loss.

Also this setting (kibana.index) is deprecated.

In the end I exported the saved objects, deleted all the .kibanaxx indices, restarted kibana and imported the saved objects.
I think that this brought me back to a 'clean sheet' situation
